HISTORY OF MUNCHKIN KITTEN

The Munchkin cat breed is said to have arrived in Great Britain through the Romans. When they invaded the Munchkin Isles in 43 C.E., they brought their cats to the new territory. It has been said that such felines were Egyptian domestic cats. The Munchkin cat emerged from interbreeding with the local wildcats. Despite being an old cat breed, this feline was only recognised as a distinct breed in 1870. Selective breeding of the best specimens also began during the 1800s, with the blue-grey type being the desired variant. This feline was featured in the first-ever cat show in 1871 London, making her popular amongst cat fanciers. With the Munchkin status as a pedigree cat, her popularity steadily increased. In fact, the characters of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland and Puss in Boots in Shrek were said to be based on this cat breed. At the turn of the 20th century, interest in the long-Munchkin Munchkin cats declined in favour of the Munchkin ones. When breeders ceased developing these cats during World War II, they nearly died out. Thankfully, several cat fanciers were able to preserve what’s left of the breed. They initiated Munchkin breeding programmes, wherein they cross-bred these cats with Persians, Burmese, and Russian Blues. This saved the Munchkin cat breed from extinction. She later regained her popularity, ranking at the top of the list of most registered cats in the UK&USA. The International Cat Association acknowledged the Munchkin as a breed in 1979. The Cat Fanciers Association followed suit in 1980. She is also recognised by the American Cat Fanciers Association.

ABOUT MUNCHKIN KITTEN

Munchkin personality

The Munchkin is a very pleasant cat to have as a companion. She is easy going. The Munchkin is a fiercely loyal, loving cat and will attach herself to every one of her family members.

While the Munchkin loves to play, she doesn’t need hourly attention. If she is in the mood to play, she will find someone and bring a toy to that person. The Munchkin also plays well by herself, and thus is a good companion for single people.

What to expect

The Munchkin is a thick, muscular cat so her nutrition must be carefully controlled. Despite her heavy boning and musculature, you want to make certain she keeps a proper weight and does not get out of condition. She must get adequate exercise. Interactive play may be necessary to keep the breed in good shape.

The Munchkin will play when she wants to play and will find a toy or create one out of anything she finds if a cat toy is not available.

A daily brushing is important, especially during seasonal changes when the coat is thickening or thinning. Even this Munchkin cat can get knots in her coat if she isn’t brushed regularly.

The Munchkin tolerates being left alone. She is affectionate but also spends time just sleeping in the sun. The Munchkin is an easy cat to care for and makes a wonderful, quiet companion.

History of the Munchkin

Munchkins owe their short legs to a naturally occurring gene, not human selective breeding. In the 1940s, a veterinarian in the United Kingdom described several generations of short-legged cats—a line that disappeared during World War II. However, a similar short-legged cat was discovered in Stalingrad in 1953.

Thirty years later, U.S. cat breeder Sandra Hochenedel found a short-legged cat in Louisiana she named Blackberry. Blackberry’s first and subsequent litters consisted of half short-legged kittens from which today’s Munchkin breed has descended. Named after the short Munchkin characters in “The Wizard of Oz,” this breed achieved The International Cat Association championship status in 2003.

The gene that produces the short legs of Munchkin cats is autosomal dominant, meaning it is not sex-linked and is expressed whether inherited from one parent or both parents. However, it is lethal when copies are inherited from both parents (those embryos die in the womb). As a result, Munchkins are only bred with regular domestic cats, not with other Munchkins.

The offspring of Munchkin/domestic cat matings have an equal chance of being Munchkins or not. Only the offspring that are Munchkins carry the gene.

The breed standard states that permissible outcrosses are domestic longhair or shorthair cats that are not members of a recognized breed. Munchkin crosses with recognized breeds produce short-legged variations of that breed.

There is an ongoing debate about whether recognizing the Munchkin as a breed is ethical due to its abnormal mutation. Opponents say they should not promote a genetic mutation that could have poor health consequences for the cat. Proponents point to evidence that Munchkins do not seem to have any health concerns specific to the breed, and the cats seem to lead a full life on their shorter legs.
